If you plan on buying only one set of armor, I'd take Glads or Platemail. These sets are versatile and are moderately useful everywhere.

Yes i have a set of radiant and dreadnoughts, but the only trouble i have is that they are both good all of the time, I would get Glads and Sentinals, as you can use sentinals when you have a lot in strength and in these cases you probably wont need too much energy anyway because you havent got many points left to put into energy expensive secondary skills.

dont go knights

It's not really accurate to say "such and such is the best" because they are useful for different things. Gladiator's/Radiant is a good choice for warriors that have combos with high energy cost, like Shock axe, "Eurospiker" (Shadow Prison axe), and many hammer builds. However, there are better choices if you don't plan to be using more than 15 energy in quick succession--remember, Death Penalty (DP) will lower your max energy.

Dreadnought is a good choice for general PvE, as spikes are rare in that context and so having a high AL is desirable. Sentinel's is also a good choice for PvE if you are using a pure weapon mastery and Strength build. If you make use of Tactics with any frequency, however, Sentinel's you would want another suit of armor to swap or just avoid Sentinel's entirely. The high price of Sentinel's insignias is another point in Dreadnought's favor.

Survivor/Berserker's armor is an excellent choice for PvP if you won't be needing the extra energy from Radiant/Gladiator's, as having a high max health helps prevent you from being spiked to death by the enemy team. This becomes especially valuable as you accumulate DP and at Victory or Death (GvG), since the health bonuses from items are not reduced.

Previously, it was advisable to wear one piece of Knight's armor because it gave a global -3 damage no matter where you were hit. Now that the damage reduction is local (only affecting hits against each specific piece of armor), Knight's is largely useless now.

If you are using any kind of knockdown (KD), it is advisable to have Stoneskin Gauntlets. KDs are less important in PvE, but are very useful in PvP.

Survivor or radiant insignias. Everything else is pretty much trash.

This isn't always true. DPing out a warrior is a common way to defuse an enemy team's offense. Warriors are just as susceptible to spikes as anyone else and are often a prime target as they overextend more than most classes. Glad/Radiant can definitely be useful, but since the addition of +health armor it's not the default choice anymore. You should only take Glad/Radiant in PvP if you really need the extra max energy; otherwise, extra health will make your more durable.

I prefer the gladiators because of the +2 energy regen from the warrior, even know most attack skills are adrenaline there are some skills that require 5 en or more and the +2 just doesnt cut it.

And for the pvp, you want to shut down the warrior most of the time and go after the soft targets first (o.e monks mesmers so on so forth) and the warrior is rended useless.

There's a common misconception that warriors are harder to kill just because they have more armor. They can handle more pressure from attacks and AoEs, yes. However, when you really want to kill someone in PvP, you spike them. The majority of spike damage ignores armor and a good spike will be "overkill"--it will do enough damage so as to guarantee a kill on most characters even after partial damage reduction from armor and such. Thus, the only thing that really determines who is a "soft" or "hard" target is their max health. A dervish in Avatar of Melandru form is a hard target to spike. A warrior in gladiator's armor is not.

Gladiator's armor is pretty much a necessity for some builds that use multiple energy skills in a short timeframe. The standard Eurospike axer will use 20e within a couple seconds during a spike, and if he has DP he won't even have enough max energy to do his combo while wearing Survivor/Berserker armor. Hence, Glad/Radiant is a good choice for that character. A YAAhoo sword will generally not be using more than 10-15e at a time, so Survivor/Berserker is a better choice for that character.

Remember that max energy only affects how much you start with, not how fast you get it back. Even if you use energy skills frequently, Glad/Radiant is not necessarily the best armor selection. A zealous weapon swap is what will allow you to use energy skills more often in the long term, whereas Glad/Radiant armor will let you use more energy skills in the short term.
